The World’s Taiwan and Its Many Faces
In year 1624, Taiwan leapt onto the world stage in the Age of Discovery. On a sandbar known as Tayouan, an age started when this Pacific island connected to the new world across the oceans. With all of Taiwanese history behind us, in 2024, we should be more actively charting new courses for Taiwan than ever before. From the perspectives of different eras and ethnicities, we should further explore our own diversity and reposition Taiwan in relation to the world.
The three sections titled “NÁ THIANN NÁ KIÂNN,” “NÁ KHUÀNN NÁ KÌ,” and “NÁ-Ē ÁN-NE” will respectively feature walking tours, documentary exhibits, and exhibition forums. We hope to transcend the venue’s limitations in space and time through different forms of curation. With the walking tours, not only can the physical aspect of the venue be expanded, digital applications can also integrate references to local landscapes. The documentary exhibits combine spatial scenarios, digital experiences, and historical objects to offer an audiovisual journey. Last but not least, through the exhibition forums, we hope to challenge existing spatial restrictions and be more experimental. With a variety of topics in exhibition halls, theaters, or lecture halls, we hope to bring visitors different experiences that resonate.
PÓ-TÓ PAH-BĪN,In the Taiwanese language, PAH-BĪN means “absolutely, definitely, or certainly.” The theme of PÓ-TÓ PAH-BĪN, in addition to literally referring to the many faces of Taiwan, incorporates the word PAH-BĪN to denote a truly authentic Taiwanese culture. The theme’s Taiwanese phrase, with its double meaning, highlights an essence of definitively Taiwanese spirit.
This year’s PÓ-TÓ PAH-BĪN is definitely an intriguing journey through history.
Key visual
The three key visuals have been inspired by the city’s historical heritages - the Confucius Temple, refined traditional metalwork, and the Fire Horse Festival unique to Kanding Township in Houbi. These visual elements are subtly incorporated into the ring-shaped words inspired by Tainan’s roundabouts. Such synthesis of symbols of traditional culture and daily life signifies the ubiquity of cultural assets in our life.
About the three continuous geometric patterns:
- The half-moon pattern resembling the frame of a paper lantern symbolizes the passing down of culture through the progression of time.
- The bricks and tiles of traditional architecture become a weaving pattern that represents the accumulation of wisdom and the spirit of traditional craft.
- The pattern reminiscent of rising incense smoke symbolizes the drive toward higher achievements.
In terms of colors, we hope to disrupt the reserved color schemes traditionally found in Tainan by using three distinct colors to create respective symbolisms for the city: The pastel blue represents the clash of diverse perspectives; the pastel green symbolizes energetic creativity; and the combination of blue and green suggests an inclusive cultural prospect.
